Hope Valley runs east-north-east from south-facing Undine Harbour near the north-westernmost tip of South Georgia, carrying a small river to the bay.

The valley was named Tal der Hoffnung by the German South Georgia Expedition, as recorded in 1930; Tal der Guten Hoffnung ('Valley of the Good Hope') appears on the Wilckens map of 1947. The English name is a translation of the German.

The name 'Undine River' was given to the river in this valley, so that the Rankin map calls the valley the 'Undine Valley'[1]. It appears as the 'Hope Valley' in later British maps.[2] The name 'Hope River' has been given to the river in this valley.[3]
