Morchard Bishop is a village in Devon, about eight miles north-west of Crediton in the heart of the county. It had a population of 975 recorded in 2001. The village has two churches, a primary school and a post office. Notable past residents include Ernest Bevin.
The local pub is The London Inn. There is also a doctor's surgery and a blacksmith.
The Two Moors Way, a long-distance walking route between Exmoor and Dartmoor runs through Morchard Bishop.
A minor river has its source by the village; the Pepper Lake, a tributary of the Lapford Yeo.
Name
The name Morchard means the great wood or forest from the Celtic: mǭr cę̃d, Modern Welsh: mawr coed. The affix of 'Bishop' is from its possession by the Bishop of Exeter, recorded in 1086.
Society and events
A village pantomime is performed each year.
The village has a playing field, with tennis court. The village football teams play here.
There is an active allotment association, and a ukulele band.
