Sanquhar

Sanquhar is a town and royal burgh in Nithsdale in Dumfriesshire. It stands on the River Nith, north of Thornhill and west of Moffat.

Sanquhar's tiny post office was established in 1712 and is claimed to be the oldest working post office in the world. An earlier claim to notoriety is that here the Covenanters, who opposed the reintroduction of bishops in Church of Scotland, signed the Sanquhar Declaration renouncing their allegiance to the King.
