Strathvaich is a minor glen in Ross-shire, in the heart of the northern Highlands, and the name of a wider estate.
Most of the glen itself is filled with Loch Vaich, a reservoir dammed to supply water to the towns of the east coast.
The river in the valley is the Black Water, though known in the top of the glan just as the Strathvaich River or the Abhainn Srath a' Bhàthaich. The Black Water flows from mountains in Strathvaich southeast for 18 miles until it joins the Conon at the county's southern border.
The Estate
The Strathvaich Estate is a historic deer forest set around the glen and the Strathvaich Forest. It is popular in particular for deer stalking, but for walkers too the remote, wild scenery is awe-inspiring. Strathvaich Lodge, on the river below the loch dam, serves the estate.
The Open Hill dominates the Estate and has been known to challenge even the very fittest sportsmen, but this does not deter them.
The number of deer breeding on the estate can grow to unmanageable numbers and so twice yearly the deer are culled by two trained stalkers employed by the Estate
