Willingale is a village and civil parish in the Dunmow hundred of Essex. The civil parish comprises the ancient parishes of Willingale Doe, Willingale Spain and Shellow Bowells. It also includes the hamlet of Miller's Green. The population of the civil parish at the 2011 census was 501.[1]

The boundary between the ancient parishes of Willingale Doe and Willingale Spain passes through the centre of the village with both parish churches being adjacent to each other, and even sharing a grave yard. Willingale Doe's church is dedicated to St Christopher;[2] while that of Willingale Spain is dedicated to St Andrew.[3]

The village hall and cricket club are to be found in Willingale Doe, to the north of the village.

Notable people

  • Richard Wiseman (1632 - 1712), landowner and Member of Parliament was born in the village.
