Boarhunt is a village in southerly Hampshire; a companion to North Boarhunt, a larger village a mile to the north. Boarhunt stands on the north slope of Ports Down: south of the village, on the ridge is a Palmerston fort, Fort Nelson, and by it the Nelson Monument. It is about two miles north-east of Fareham. The nearest town is Portchester to the south, over Ports Down.
This is a tiny place now, the original village having practically disappeared, so that Boarhunt is classified as a 'deserted village'.[1]
The name of the village is believed locally to be a corruption of the Old English burg funta, meaning "fort stream".[2]
Church
The village church is St Nicholas church which is almost completely Saxon in its structure with its font probably dating to the same period.[3] It is a Grade I listed building. The church has been dated as having been constructed in 1064.[1] Further work appears to have taken place in the 13th century.[3] In 1577 a monument to Ralph Henslowe was added to the interior.[3]
A general restoration was carried out in 1853 at which point a bell-turret was added and the current furnishings were fitted.[3]
