The River Main or Maine is a river in County Antrim, thirty-four miles long and running from the Antrim Hills across the county to Lough Neagh.

Terence O'Neill, a Prime Minister of Northern Ireland, took the title "Baron O'Neill of the Maine" when he was made a life peer.

Course

The River Main rises in the Antrim Hills, then descending to the west and forming a broad valley as it flows to the south. The name of the river is from the Gaelic Maighin, meaning "Plain".

The main flows through Ballymena and Randalstown before entering Lough Neagh.

Wildlife

The River Main is a noted salmon and trout fishery.[1]
