Lye is a village in Worcestershire, within the Black Country, once a village within the parish of Oldswinford,[1] but now a distinctive place.
Lye railway station is on the Stourbridge–Birmingham mainline. It has the joint-shortest name for a railway station (Lye) in the United Kingdom.
Places of Interest
The local cemetery, the Lye / Wollescote Cemetery, which contains a pair of Grade II listed chapels.[2]
Sir Cedric Hardwicke
Lye was the birthplace of the actor Sir Cedric Hardwicke,[3] which is commemorated by a sculpture by Tim Tolkien. The memorial takes the form of a giant filmstrip, the illuminated cut metal panels illustrating scenes from some of his best-known roles, which include The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939), Things to Come, and The Ghost of Frankenstein. It was unveiled in November 2005.[4]
Sport
Lye Town FC are based in the town. They have competed in the West Midlands Regional League since 1947.[5] Their home ground is The Sports Ground
Lyer Cricket Club are also based at The Spoirts Ground.
