Description
English: The Worcester Bar stop lock, in Gas Street Basin, Birmingham, England, built when the physical barrier called the Worcester Bar between the Birmingham Canal (BCN) and the later Worcester and Birmingham Canal was breached to allow through navigation of narrowboats. You can see the recesses in the canal walls where two opposing lock gates were once fitted to preserve water. One would have stopped water from flowing from BCN to W&B, the other gate would have stopped the reverse flow. The same arrangement occurs at the other end of the lock, creating a tidal lock, to allow a boat through where either canal could be higher than the other. Photographed by me 13 April 2007. Oosoom
