Description

Adam Ceiling
Plaster, painting in oil on canvas-backed paper; detail

Designed by Robert Adam (1728-1792); possibly made by David Adamson (act. 1770- 90); painted by Antonio Pietro Francesco Zucchi (1726-1795)
Originally at 5 Adelphi Terrace, owned by David Garrick (1717-1779)
English
c.1771

Roundel with the central motif of octagonal shape concave sides within a circular frame of vitruvian scroll with festoons, ribbons and drops; in the centre a painting of Apollo, with his horses being watered and fed by the Horae (Seasons). The eight outer sections of the octagon decorated with alternating rinceaux and scrolled half-figures.

Robert Adam's treatment of ceilings, derived from a close study of ancient Roman examples, was one of his most influential inventions. Their delicate patterns of low relief ornament and strong colours were set off by figurative panels carried out by Italian painters. This ceiling from Adam's Adelphi development in London, has been only partially restored. In some areas Adam's original decoration can be seen, without the overpainting done in the 1970s.
