Stockport gained its market charter in 1260. The Stone Hen Market (produce market) was built in 1851, and the magnificent glass filled wrought and cast iron framework in 1860. Originally the sides were left open, giving it the nickname of the glass umbrella.
Castle Yard and Vernon street. Castle yard is the oldest part of the market, and the site of the long gone Stockport Castle.
