Summary

Description
English: Stained-glass window depicting St. Columba, St. Andrew and St. Cuthbert above St. Margaret, St. Giles and St. David. It is not known why St. Giles of obscure French origin was adopted as the town's patron saint, but he would have been familiar to the Augustinian canons who founded Holyrood Abbey. King David I, who gifted so much land to the Church that later kings judged him "a sair sanct for the croun" (James I of Scotland), was never formally canonised. His status as a 'popular saint' was officially acknowledged by his appearance on a list of Scottish saints drawn up by Archbishop Laud for the Scottish version of the Anglican prayer-book in the reign of Charles I. It is assumed that Charles requested the inclusion, perhaps to create a more impressive royal lineage for himself and in the eyes of his Scottish subjects.
