"Offerings in water Watery places were favored for making offerings. They were seen as boundaries between the human world the the world of the gods, where contact could be made. At the Roman fort of Newstead, offerings to the gods were put into wells when they fell out of use. Usually objects such as human and animal heads [1-5] were thrown into them. Everyday objects such as tools [9-10] and pots [8] were also places in the wells - some were smashed in the process. After such ceremonies, the wells were left to fill up with earth and rubbish." |
