Summary

Description
English: Maiden Castle An iron age enclosure possibly dating from 600 BC. It is banjo shaped with a narrow stone lined entrance corridor 110m long. This is best seen from aerial photographs. It is thought that initially it was a settlement of peoples attracted by the precious metals, lead and silver, abundant in the dale. Its strategic location as a defensive structure seems odd but not unusual with several other examples of hillforts built on a slope.
