Summary

Description

The 3 Metal Man beacons on Greater Newtown Head in Tramore, and across Tramore Bay on the eastern arm, lay the 2 Brownstown Head beacons. These were erected in the early 1800s after the terrible tragedy of the Sea Horse which went down in the Bay, with a loss of around 350 souls, including women and children. It is said the seahorse logo of Waterford Crystal goods was used as a reference to this. The Metal Man figure is one of two cast from a mould, though 4 were originally thought to have been made. He is dressed in the uniform of a Naval Petty Officer. The other Metal Man is in Sligo Bay.

Sadly the beacons didn't prevent many accidents, and there are many shipwrecks around the treacherous rocks at Newtown Head, and others ran aground on sandbanks when they mistook Tramore Bay for the deep waters of Wateford Harbour. The estuary of the confluence of the Suir, Nore and Barrow (3 Sisters) runs into the sea at Dunmore East, further east from Tramore.
