Downton is a village in Herefordshire, in the north of the county.
In the Domesday Book Downton is referred to as "Duntune", meaning "hill settlement".
At Downton Gorge the River Teme cuts through a limestone ridge, and above the gorge is Downton Castle, an 18th-century country house with a tower built to resemble a castle.[1]
Parish church
The parish church is St Giles,[2] and is now a church of the Parish of Wigmore Abbey.[3]
The village is part of the Leintwardine group of parishes.
