Bomarsund is an unusually named village in northern Northumberland, sitting to the north of Bedlington, and just south of Stakeford.

The village grew around a coal pit opened in 1854, and took its name from a battle fought in that year, in one of the minor theatres of the Crimean War. In 1854 a British and French naval force attacked the Russian fortress of Bomarsund on the Åland Islands in the Baltic Sea, and in celebration of the successful attack, the new pit village received its Swedish-sounding name.

Bomarsund is now home to the Northumberland Brewery.

Bomarsund won the National Village Cricket Championship in 1974 in a final played at Edgbaston, Warwickshire’s home ground.
