Innis Chonnell
Innischonnell is an island in Loch Awe, in the heart of Argyllshire. It is part of Kilchrenan and Dalavich parish.
The loch is an inland loch cutting a long, deep slash through the mountains, and Innis Chonnell lies within these waters; a small island close by the east shore of the loch, with Dalavich facing it fro the opposite shore. The significance of the island is Ardchonnel Castle, once the stronghold of the Clan Campbell.
History
Ardchonnel Castle dates from the 11th century, and belonged to the Chiefs of the Clan Campbell, who were elevated to Earls of Argyle and laterly the Dukes of Argyll. The Campbells mustered a mighty military force in their time.
The castle is now a ruin covered in heather. From this place comes the Campbell motto that "It's a far cry to Lochow" [Loch Awe], since they often launched attacks from this island and it remained the Campbell's impregable fortress, daring any foe that it is indeed a far cry to their loch.
