The Cathedral Church of St Patrick, Trim, known as Trim Cathedral is a cathedral of the Church of Ireland in Trim in Meath. Previously it served the Diocese of Meath, but when that diocese merged with its neighbour, it became one of two cathedrals of the new 'United Dioceses of Meath and Kildare', which is part of the Province of Dublin.

History

The present Church was built in 1803, replacing an earlier parish church, which dated back to the 15th century. The tower of today's church is a remnant of the mediæval parish church.[1]

Even the 15th century building was itself a newcomer: ruins of the original church lay behind the 15th Century cathedral. By succession from this ancient edifice, Trim Cathedral is reputed to be the oldest church in Ireland, though this is disputed by a church in Armagh which claims to be twenty years older

Walter de Brugge, an English born judge, was appointed vicar of St Patrick's in 1381.[2]

Bishops have been enthroned here since 1536 but it was not raised to Cathedral status until 1955.

The tower clock commemorates Dean Butler, the historian of Trim. Stained glass in the west window was the first ever stained glass designed by Edward Burne-Jones. During 1992 the Cathedral was re roofed and beams renewed in the gallery.
