Toft next Newton is a little village in Lindsey, Lincolnshire's northern part.
The village church, the Church of St Peter and St Paul is no longer open for worship. It was originally built in the thirteenth century, but was extensively remodelled in 1891 by Hodgson Fowler. It is a grade II listed building,[1] The church was closed in 1986 and was sold for residential use in 1989.[2] The village is now served by St Michael's in neighbouring Newton by Toft.
About the village
Close by the villages is Toft Newton Reservoir, on the upper reaches of the River Ancholme. It attracts anglers, amongst whom it is particularly known for trout, and bird watchers. The reservoir covers nearly 41 acres, and is supplied with water from Short Ferry, on the River Witham, through a pipeline ten and a half miles long. It is used to maintain flows in the Ancholme during the summer months.
The reservoir is regularly stocked with rainbow trout and brown trout. Facilities include a "wheelyboat", which is designed to allow wheelchair users to access the fishery.[3]
