Sumburgh Head

Sumburgh Head at the southern tip of the Shetland Mainland is a rocky spur over 300 feet high. The Old Norse name for the headland, Dunrøstar høfdi, means "The Head onto the Thunderous Noise", referring to the unforgiving tidal race below known as the Sumburgh Roost.

Shetland's main airport, Sumburgh Airport, lies immediately to the north of the head. Close by too is Jarlshof, a major archaeological site stretching from the Stone Age to the Middle Ages. (Read more)
