Ancient Roman pavements and baths remain in Leicester from its early settlement as Ratae Corieltauvorum. Later it was one of five fortified towns of the Danelaw. The Industrial Revolution made Leicester became a major economic centre, with engineering, shoemaking and hosiery production, and causing expansion.
