Flint Castle

Flint Castle stands in majestic ruin in Flint, the county town of Flintshire. This was the first of a series of castles built during King Edward I's campaign to conquer North Wales. Built by Savoyard architects, it is of a design unique within the British Isles.

The site was chosen for its strategic position in the northeast of Wales. The castle was only one day's march from Chester, and supplies could be brought along the River Dee and by a ford across the river crossable at low tide. The castle last saw action during the Civil War, after which it was slighted by order of Parliament. (Read more)
