The High Street and Crooked Spire in Chesterfied, Derbyshire

Chesterfield Chesterfield is a market town in north-eastern Derbyshire, which stands where the rivers Rother and Hipper meet. It is Derbyshire's largest town after Derby. Chesterfield is perhaps best known for the "Crooked Spire" of its parish church, which has become a symbol of the town. The spire is both twisted and leaning, twisting 45 degrees and leaning 9 feet from its true centre. The explanation for the twist in the spire has given rise to many a ribald tale - serious study puts it down to the absence of skilled craftsmen after the Black Death and the use of unseasoned timber, which is les interesting than the local explanations.
