Swayfield is a village in Kesteven, the south-western part of Lincolnshire. The population of the civil parish at the 2011 census was 316.
The village is to be found just over three miles east of the A1 road, nine miles south-east of Kesteven's main town, Grantham, and ten miles north of Stamford. It has approximately 138 houses.
History
A deserted mediæval village has been identified nearby, probably the vill of Sudwelle.[1] Traces of earlier settlements in the form of barrow burials have also been suggested.[2]
The village is reputed to have been a site for a signalling beacon at the time of the Spanish Armada and a modern fire-basket stands in the village, erected for 400th anniversary in 1988.
In 1848 the village was described as:
"Swayfield (St. Nicholas), a parish, in the union of Bourne, wapentake of Beltisloe, parts of Kesteven, county of Lincoln, 2 miles (S. by W.) from Corby; containing 265 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, valued in the king's books at £11. 2. 11., and in the gift of the Crown; net income, £391. The tithes were commuted for land and corn-rents in 1797".[3]
During the Second World War, Swayfield was the site of two dummy airfields, the remains of which can still be seen.[4]
Geography
Swayfield is eight miles from Bourne by the A151, twelve miles from Grantham by the B1176, fifteen miles from Stamford by the B1176 and sixteen miles from Oakham in Rutland: the Rutland county border is three miles away. To the east, adjacent] to the village, is the East Coast Main Line.
Nearby villages include Castle Bytham, Corby Glen, Swinstead, Creeton and Lobthorpe.
About the village
St Nicholas stands at the edge of the village on Church Lane.
The village public house is the Royal Oak on the High Street. There is also a village hall.
