Sudbrooke is a small village in Lindsey, the northern part of Lincolnshire, standing four and a half miles north-east of the centre of Lincoln. The population of the civil parish at the 2011 census was 1,788.
The A158 Lincoln to Skegness road runs near Sudbrooke and the A158 road too. The original heart of the village gathers around the church as it has done for centuries, but this is now just the tiny, north-western corner of Sudbrooke, and the main development extends from here south and east to the main road and the estate grounds of Subbrooke Park. Known only from written records, the site of Holme in Sudbrooke has been built over since.[1]
An oil well has been sunk here, the facilities of which are at the north-east edge of the village, and extending to an area as large as the village itself.
The parish church, St Edward the Confessor, was built in 1860 by John Dobson of Newcastle upon Tyne. It is a Grade II* listed building.[2] A much older churchyard cross was restored at about the same time.[3] The new church replaced an older brick building, possibly itself a successor to an older Norman church.
There appears to have been a searchlight battery in the village at some point during the Second World War.[4]
Although facilities are few, Sudbrooke has a shop, a café, a hairdresser, a filling station, two playgrounds, and a village hall which is primarily used by independent groups.[5][6]
