Skirpenbeck is a village in the East Riding of Yorkshire, two miles north-west of Stamford Bridge and just north of the A166 road.
The 2011 census recorded a parish population of 192.
The name 'Skirpenbeck' is first attested in the Domesday Book of 1086, where it appears as Scarpenbec. It derives from the Old Norse skerping bekkr, meaning barren land by a beck or stream.[1]
There are several working farms around the village, seven by a recet count, some of which have been farmed by the same families for generations.
The parish church, St Mary's, is a Grade II* listed building.[2] There are markings on the church, near the bell tower, that appear to be Saxon runes.
