North Somercotes is a coastal village in Lindsey, the northern part of Lincolnshire. The village is situated midway between the towns of Mablethorpe and Cleethorpes. In 2011 village population was recorded as 1,732.

There are two pubs in the village: the Axe and Cleaver and the Bay Horse.

North Somercotes is essentially rural in character, with fields and footpaths, however, over the last decade there has been housing development.

Churches

St Mary's Church,North Somercotes

The parish church in North Somercotes, St Mary, is known as a "Marshland" church. It of Early English style, dating from the 12th century, though it was heavily restored in the 19th century. The church is a Grade I listed building, standing in Church End.[1][2]

The church is part of the Somercotes and Grainthorpe with Conisholme group of the Deanery of Louthesk in the Diocese of Lincoln. The parish is shared with South Somercotes and its church, St Peter.

A Pentecostal Church meets in the village hall.

The Methodist Church was formerly represented by the village's Trinity Methodist Church, which was part of the Louth Circuit. It closed in November 2013.

About the village

To the south of the village on Warren Lane is Locksley Hall, a 16th-century red-brick and ashlar Grade II listed house.[2][3]

RAF Donna Nook is based at North Somercotes: The beach at Donna Nook, a mile and a half from the village, is used by the RAF for target practice, with bombing carried-out at limited times during the week and outside the main seal breeding season of November and December.

In November and December, visitors are attracted to a grey seal breeding colony at Donna Nook beach. The colony is warden-controlled and visitors view seals at close quarters.

Events and society

The North Somercotes annual fete was last held in 2000; the next year it was blocked by measures against foot and mouth disease and it has not yet revived.

A Pancake Race is a surviving village tradition; it takes place annually on Shrove Tuesday.

An annual 5 a-side football tournament is held on the Playing Fields in mid-July over a full weekend.

A monthly village local directory, Communication, is collated by residents and distributed free-of-charge to villagers.

In August every year there is terrier racing open to everyone in the village to attend this is held on the Playing Fields and is a popular event for villagers.
