Lower Sundon is a hamlet in Bedfordshire, the smaller of the two villages of the Parish of Sundon, along with Upper Sundon to the north. The edge of Luton is just half a mile to the south.
The parish church is St Mary The Virgin, in Lower Sundon, a thirteenth century church with two rare survivals: an ancient screen and wall paintings. There are old pews in the church too and a parish chest sits in the church.
The sage of the church suggests that Lower Sundon is the elder of the pair of villages, Upper Sundon built up on the hill later, albeit that the name 'Sundon' contains the Old English dun, meaning 'Hill'. Certainly Sundon was founded before the Norman Conquest.
