Ireby is a small hamlet and civil parish on the edge of Lancashire, bordering Yorkshire. It lies just inside the recently extended boundaries of the Yorkshire Dales, near the community of Masongill in Yorkshire. The parish had a population of 78 according to the 2001 Census.[1] The name means "Town of the Irish Vikings".[2]
Parish and county
The township of Ireby lies within the ancient parish of Thornton in Lonsdale despite the rest of the parish being in Yorkshire. It was because this area was in Lonsdale that it became part of the Lonsdale Hundred of Lancashire. This piece of Lancashire is four miles long and in width tapers from over a mile to only about 100 yards.[3]
