Hawthornden is a hamlet in Midlothian, immediately northeast of the edge of Rosewell village, and to the south of Bonnyrigg.

The North Esk river flows to the west of the hamlet in a wooded dene, from which apparently the hamlet is named, and by the river stands Hawthornden Castle; the remains of a fallen fortress and a sixteenth century mansion built upon it.

The castle is at the foot of Roslin Glen. Wallace’s Cave is found just south of the castle.
