Great Crosthwaite is a village which has become in effect an outer suburb of the Lake District tourist town of Keswick in Cumberland. It stands on the north side of the River Greta, opposite Keswick itself, less than half a mile from the northern end of Derwent Water.
This is said to have been the original settlement of Keswick.
About the village
Within Great Crosthwaite is the Mary Hewtson Cottage Hospital, the Howard Allen Hall Sports Hall, Keswick School and Keswick Cycle Hire.
The A5271 road runs past Great Crosthwaite and through Keswick town centre, the B5289 road nearby, the A591 road going south towards Kendal and Windermere and north towards Little Crosthwaite and Carlisle. The A66 road by-passes Keswick and Great Crossthwaite. There is a roundabout on the by-pass where the A66 road, the A591 road and the A5271 road meet, called Crosthwaite Roundabout.
Derwent Water lies half a mile to the south, while the River Greta runs past the village centre, to join the River Derwent just beyond, the conjoined rivers immediately entering Derwent Water.
