Fotherby is a village in Lindsey, the northern part of Lincolnshire. It is situated just east of the A16 road, thirteen miles east of Market Rasen, and ten miles south of Cleethorpes.
In the Domesday Book, Fotherby is recorded as "Fodrebi".[1] Before the Norman Conquest, the lordship was held by Thorgot Lag, and afterwards by Berengar of Tosny, with Robert of Tosny as Tenant-in-chief.[2]
In 1885 Kelly's noted six almshouses, built in 1866 for the benefit of six poor people by James Fowler, on the site of an older glebe house.[3] The parish was 1,400 acres in area, and the chief agricultural production was wheat, barley, oats, turnips, seeds and beans. In 1881, the population was 1,881.[4]
Parish church
The parish church, St Mary, is a Grade II listed building.[5] It was entirely rebuilt by James Fowler in 1863, in Early English style with chancel, nave, south porch, and western tower with a broach spire containing three bells originally cast in 1608.[4][6]
