The Forest of Atholl,a place of open moor and mountain, overspreads a great deal of the northern part of Perthshire known as Atholl. It is essentially the lands north of Glen Garry (and west of Glen Bruar) up towards the watershed which marks the end of the shire. This was once the land of the Dukes of Atholl, and the Duke retains substantial holdings here.
It is a forest in the original sense, of an open moorland, not a wooded landscape. In the same manner the Dalnacardoch Forest to the west and the Dalnamein Forest to the east are open estates, and both considered part of the larger Forest of Atholl.
