The charges are variously blazoned as "ashen keys", "ash-crops" and "pineapples", "pines pendant". Pineapples unlikely, ashen keys seems optimal description as canting arms: Argent, three ash-crops vert between two chevrons sable (Pole, Sir William (d.1635), Collections Towards a Description of the County of Devon, Sir John-William de la Pole (ed.), London, 1791, p.468 "Ashford of Ashford"); Argent, between two chevrons sable three ashen keys vert (Vivian, Lt.Col. Also Argent, on a chevron couple closed sable three ashen keys vert and Argent, on a chevron voided sable three ashen keys vert.
