Duntisbourne Rouse is a village in Gloucestershire, amongst the Cotswold Hills. The 2001 census recorded a population of 70.
The village is some ten miles south-east of Gloucester and four miles north-west of Cirencester. Nearby villages include Duntisbourne Abbots, Duntisbourne Leer, Bagendon and Daglingworth.
The village is recorded as Duntesburne in 1055 and Duntesborne in the 1086 Domesday Book, the name coming from the Old English for "Dunt's stream" after an otherwise unknown progenitor.[1] The suffix 'Rouse' indicates manorial ownership: the manor was owned by a family called le Rous.[1][2] By 1287, the village was known as Duntesbourn Rus.[1]
Church
The parish church St Michael's stands on the side of a hill overlooking the Dunt Valley.[3] It is a Grade I listed building.[4]
The church dates from Saxon times, includes a small crypt beneath the building.[5] The chancel was added in Norman times.[6]
The choir stalls contain five misericords.[6] Whether they were originally installed in this church or imported from elsewhere is unknown.[7] The windows date from the 12th century, the tower from the 15th century and the pews and panelling from the 18th century.[3]
The organ was donated by Vera, Charlotte and Jeanne Beauchamp in memory of their sister, modernist writer Katherine Mansfield.
