Dun is a rural parish in Angus. It contains the House of Dun, home of the Erskine family and is a stop on the Caledonian Railway. It is located on the river South Esk, east of Montrose and west of Brechin. In 1785-7 a bridge was built there across the South Esk. The writer Violet Jacob was born at the House of Dun. William Chalmers Burns, a famous evangelist, was born at Dun in 1815.
House of Dun

The Dun Estate was home to the Erskine (later Kennedy-Erskine) family from 1375 until 1980, whose member include John Erskine of Dun, a key figure in the Scottish Reformation. The current house, th House of Dun, was designed by William Adam and finished in 1730. The House of Dun, together with the adjacent Montrose Basin nature reserve, is a National Trust for Scotland property.
Ancient history
The proximate area evinces archaeological evidence of early man dating back 9000 years. Besides finds at the House of Dun property itself, there is a large standing stone a few miles to the north known as the Stone of Morphie.
