Dummer is a village in Hampshire six miles south-west of Basingstoke and half a mile south of Junction 7 on the M3 motorway.
The 2011 census recorded a population of 466 in 201 households.
Parish church
All Saints Church is in the centre of the village. The church is part of the Church of England benefice of Farleigh, Candover and Wield.
The Domesday Book of 1086 records the existence of a Church at Dummer, but the oldest, visible part of the present building is the south doorway of the nave which dates from the 12th century: a round-headed window, close to the font.
The chancel and chancel arch date from around 1200. Above the arch of the chancel is a 15th century rood canopy; a magnificent and rare example of such a ceiling preserved almost intact. The canopy is coved and comprises four by two panels with large square bosses.
At the west end is a gallery dates from the days of Charles II. The oldest and thickest beam at the back of the gallery may have been salvaged from a ship. All the timbers of the belfry adjoining the gallery are of great size and strength and it is just possible that this is the Saxon wooden church.
During the Middle Ages the advowson was held by Dummer family, lords of the manor.[1]
History
The name of the village is derived from 'Dun' (meaning hill) and 'Mere' (lake or pond). The surname 'Dummer' is thought to originate from here, as the Dummer family were lords of the manor between the 12th and 16th centuries.
About the village
A public house, The Queen Inn, is north of the church on Down Street towards the M3.[2]
Also towards the M3 is the Dummer Golf Club, to the north-east of the village.[3]
On the other side of the M3 north of the A30 are the Dummer Garden Centre,[4] and a public house, The Sun Inn. A short distance south-west down the A30 is another public house and hotel, The Wheatsheaf.[5]
To the south-west of Dummer village by about three-quarters of a mile is Dummer Down Farm: this is the site of the Dummer Cricket Centre which was founded by Major Ronald Ferguson, father of Sarah, Duchess of York.[6]
