Culmstock is a village in Devon, found in the Blackdown Hills about twelve miles from Tiverton and seven miles north-east of Cullompton. It is laid out on both sides of the River Culm, the village being joined by a single, old, narrow stone bridge across the river. The church and village centre are south of the river, while the northern portion, of no inferior size, is known as Millmoor.
The population of the parish at the 2011 Census was 554.
Just to the north of the village (and on the northern boundary of the parish) is Devon's boder with Somerset. The village is surrounded on the Devon side with such villages as Hemyock, Uffculme, Burlescombe and Holcombe Rogus.[1]
The village was at one time prosperous as a centre of weaving and the wool trade, but this prosperity, and the population of the village, declined considerably with the onset of the Industrial Revolution, which took weaving into the great mills in the cities.[2]
In literature
R.D. Blackmore lived in Culmstock for six years while his father, John Blackmore, was Curate-in-charge of the parish and he based his novel Perlycross on the Culm Valley.[3]
