Claverton is a small village and parish in Somerset, about two miles east of Bath, at the southern end of the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The parish forms part of the liberty of Hampton and Claverton within the Bath Forum hundred, with a population of 115 at the 2011 census.[1]
History
Claverton Pumping Station is a pumping station, which pumps water from the River Avon to the Kennet and Avon Canal using power from the flow of the River Avon.[2] It is designated as a Grade-II listed building.[3]
The American Museum in Britain is based at Claverton Manor, in a house designed by Jeffry Wyattville and built in the 1820s.[4] (Grid reference ST785640). It is a Grade-I listed building.[5]
Claverton was recognised as being of special architectural and historic interest and was designated a Conservation Area in November 1981.[6]
Religious sites
The church of St Mary the Virgin has a Norman tower and contains a peal of six bells including three dated 1637. Other parts of the church date from the 13th century, but underwent extensive renovation in 1858.[7][8] Ralph Allen of Prior Park is buried in a pyramid-topped tomb in Claverton churchyard.[9]
