Information

Castell Moeddyn is an Iron Age Celtic hillfort, located near Llanarth in Cardiganshire. It is from here that the Moyddyn Hundred of the county takes its name.

This hillfort is registered by Cadw and is identified with the unique SAM number: CD082.[1] There are about 300 hillforts on Cadw's list of ancient monuments, although archaeologists note that there are around 570 of them in Wales.

The fort is situated on a blunt spur which falls steeply to the south but with a very easy approach from the north. The defences consisted of a strong bank, ditch and counterscarp-bank, about 60 ft in overall width by 13-16 ft high where best preserved (for about 30 yds on the north-west), but reduce to a scarp on the south end with the ditch silted up elsewhere. The steepness of the outer face of the main bank suggests the presence of a stone revetment, now entirely concealed by turf. The entrance, on the north-east, is a simple gap.[2]
