Burstock is a village in western Dorset, five miles south of Crewkerne. The 2011 census recorded that parish had 59 dwellings, with 49 households and a population of 120.

Burstock is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Bureuuinestoch,[1] which is believed to mean 'Burgwine's farm' or 'Burgwynn's' farm' (the latter a woman's name).[2] It had 12 households, 8 acres of meadow and 3 ploughlands. The lord was William Malbank and the tenant-in-chief was Earl Hugh of Chester.[3]

Before the Dissolution of the Monasteries under King Henry VIII, Burstock was closely associated with the Cistercian monks at nearby Forde Abbey; at Whetham, in the north of the parish, the abbey developed a mill, and in 1316 the Abbot became Burstock's lord of the manor.[2]
