Bothwell Bridge crosses the River Clyde at Bothwell in Lanarkshire. Once the main road, it now carries the local B7071 road: it has since been bypassed by the New Bothwell Bridge which stands beside it, immediately upstream.
There is believed to have been a bridge crossing the Clyde here since the 14th century, and Bothwell Bridge is frequently attributed to this period, though a new bridge was built in the seventeenth century, and the structure currently standing appears to be late Georgian.
On 22 June 1679, armed Covenanters clashed with government forces here, at the Battle of Bothwell Bridge. The forces of the Crown were victorious, which effectively ended the Covenanters' rebellion.
