Ayle is a village in the very west of Northumberland, situated to the north of Alston, which lies across in Cumberland. There are six residences in the hamlet.
The hamlet stands to the north of the Ayle Burn, up a steep bank from the stream. The burn here forms the border between Northumberland and Cumberland, but falls into the South Tyne just a few hundred yards below Ayle.
