Avondale is a parish at the south-western extremity of the Middle Ward of Lanarkshire, adjacent to the border with Ayrshire. It contains the town of Strathaven, whose name is cognate to that of the parish, and the village of Drumclog.
It is bounded to the north-west by East Kilbride; to the north and north-east by Glassford; to the east by Stonehouse and Lesmahagow; to the south by Muirkirk in Ayrshire, and to the west by the Ayrshire parishes of Sorn, Galston, and Loudoun.
The Avon Water, rising in the extreme south-west, flows through the parish north-easterly for 13 miles, first on the boundary with Galston, next through the whole interior, and then on the Stonehouse border, leaving the parish north-east of Strathaven.
The A71 road from Irvine to Edinburgh passes through the parish. Strathaven was formerly served by the Hamilton and Strathaven Railway which closed in 1945.
