Albury is a village in Surrey on the Tilling Bourne, the brook running beneath the scarp of the North Downs. Albury lies some 4 miles south-east of Guildford town centre. The whole village is within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Site of Special Scientific Interest.
The popular Victorian poet and writer Martin Tupper was born in Albury and chose it and the surrounding villages as the setting for his book Stephan Langton, a Romance of the Silent Pool. Tupper claimed that the legend was all based on fact, when it was in fact all fiction, though it continues in local legend, frequently accepted as an ancient folktale, and it draws visitors here and to Friday Street.[1] The Silent Pool itself, where the tale tells of the woodcutter's daughter who drowned herself rather than submit to the lusts of King John, lies to the north of Albury.
