Staincross is a village in the West Riding of Yorkshire, off the A61 road three miles from Barnsley and eight miles from Wakefield. Adjascent villages include Mapplewell and Darton, which are so contiguous with Staincross that it is unclear where the boundaries between the three villages lie.
The village gives its name to the Riding's Staincross Wapentake.
Name
The name is believed to be derived from an Anglo-Saxon stone cross ('stane cross') that until the 18th century occupied a position on the junction of Staincross Common - which in itself is an ancient trackway - and Greenside. It may have been a typical wapentake meeting cross. One has been partially reconstructed in Cawthorne parish church grounds.[1]
