Montgomery Castle

Montgomery Castle is a stone castle in Montgomeryshire overlooking the county town – Montgomery. It is one of many Norman castles which guarded what was once a wild frontier.

The original motte and bailey, now known as Hen Domen, and was built at the order of Roger de Montgomery, Earl of Shrewsbury at some time between 1071 and 1074, and the fortress was further developed by later lords. The castle was mauled in many wars until finally destroyed by order of Parliament after the Civil War. (Read more)
