Ewes
Ewes is a parish in eastern Dumfriesshire adjacent to the border with Roxburghshire. It is located four miles north of Langholm. Ewesdale, the former appellation of this place, has been long contracted into Ewes, the name of its chief river, so called from the Celtic Uisge, signifying water. The church, an ancient structure, was repaired in 1831. The original Lower or Nether Kirk of Ewes dedicated to St Cuthbert had a thatched roof and stood on the site of the present-day building. The kirkyard contains many interesting old memorial stones.
