The Floating Harbour, Bristol

Floating Harbour The Floating Harbour is the harbour in the city of Bristol, formed from the natural course of the River Avon in the city and it marks the division of the city between Gloucestershire to the north and Somerset to the south. The harbour covers an area of 70 acres. It has existed since the 13th century but was developed into its current form in the early 19th century by installing lock gates on a tidal stretch of the River Avon to stop it emptying with each ebb tide, thereby allowing ships to float at all times; hence 'floating harbour'. It failed to restore Bristol's position as a leading port but has provided a fine waterside for the city. (Read more)
